Fire Fighting System Design for Tender Project– Petroleum Depot Upgrade

Project: Awash Depot Up-gradation – Fire Fighting System
Client: Ethiopian Petroleum Supply Enterprise (EPSE)
Location: Awash, Ethiopia
Standards: NFPA 20, NFPA 24, OISD-117, TAC Manuals, UL/FM Approved Materials

Scope of Work

Provided detailed design and engineering for the upgrade of the Awash petroleum depot’s fire protection infrastructure, in line with the recommendations of the Fire Safety Study (FSS) and stringent international codes.
The design addressed integration with existing systems while accommodating a higher fire water demand to protect against two simultaneous major fire scenarios.

Design Deliverables

  • Fire Water Pumping System Layout

    • Main diesel-driven fire water pumps (4 duty + 2 standby) sized to meet 1,838 m³/h design flow rate.

    • Jockey pump configuration (1 duty + 1 standby) to maintain system pressure.

    • Suction and discharge manifolds, test return lines, valve arrangements, and tie-in details to the existing hydrant network.

  • Foam Supply & Feeding System

    • New foam pumping station (1 diesel + 1 electric standby) with proportioning equipment and foam concentrate storage.

    • Feeder header design up to tie-in with existing foam solution network.

  • Hydrant Ring Main (Design Only)

    • New 16” loop sized for 120% of design flow rate with residual pressure ≥7 kg/cm² at the remotest point.

    • Hydrant spacing, valve locations, air release arrangements, and provisions for sectional isolation.

  • Pump House & Control Room Layouts

    • General arrangement drawings, elevations, foundations, and pipe support layouts for the new fire pump and foam pump house.

  • Integration Points

    • Tie-in designs for connecting new pumps to the existing ring main, foam network, and tank outlet headers.

Compliance & Outcome

  • Design complied with NFPA, OISD, and TAC requirements, ensuring operational reliability and ease of maintenance.

  • Achieved optimized pump selection, pipe sizing, and equipment layout for uninterrupted depot protection.

  • Delivered P&IDs, GA drawings, preliminary layouts, and design basis documents for tender execution.

Value Delivered

This design enables EPSE to implement a modern, high-capacity fire protection system capable of addressing increased hazard scenarios at the Awash petroleum depot while integrating seamlessly with existing assets.
